Tugu Church

Jl. Raya Tugu North Jakarta,
Map
After the Dutch invaded Malaka in 1614, they brought back to Batavia Portuguese prisoners of war which were freed after working for the VOC. They lived in an area in Cilincing, known as Kampung Tugu and could only speak Portuguese. Keroncong music is said to originate from this Portuguese community. The descendants of these people don't speak Portuguese now, but retain their Portuguese names and their own unique interesting customs and traditions, such as their harvest festival, bathing festival and shooting ceremonies. In 1641 a church was built in Tugu and again in 1725 which later burnt down. The present church was built in 1744. The church bell is located outside the church. Its roof is 7 to 8 meters high but it has no spire.
