Dozens of kites fluttered and danced in the sky, almost as though they too were listening to the song Layang-Layang (kites), by 1970s band Koes Plus, as it played in the background at the Central Jakarta Kites Festival.
Guiding their creations with
a single thread, the 88 participants in the competition, held at
National Monument (Monas) Park on Sunday, fought for their kites to fly
the highest and longest before the wind brought them down.
But kite-flying champions from Bandung, Yogyakarta, tsunami-hit Pangardaran and Malaysia, stole the day.
The second annual festival to be held by the Jakarta Kite Fliers
Association had two competition categories -- traditional and
two-dimensional creations.
The winners of the competitions, aside from demonstrating their flying
ability, needed to excel in visual appeal, design structure and
craftsmanship, in accordance with standards set by the American Kite
Fliers Association.
But Sunday's festival was not just about winning. The real appeal of
the event was the kites themselves, a beautiful combination of art and
aviation science.
