The fourth annual Wayang Week received a positive response from the public, a Wayang Museum spokesman said Friday.
"The visitor numbers were 30
to 40 percent higher than in previous years," said Budi Santoso,
education and exhibition section head at the Jakarta Culture and Museum
Affairs Agency.
Budi said school students, tourists and the general public have been
coming to the exhibition, which features a wide range of leather wayang puppets and will run until Aug. 27.
Antara quoted Budi as saying that this year's exhibition displayed puppets including Wayang Purwa Kyai Intan, Wayang Purwa Surakarta, Wayang Purwa Betawi and Wayang Purwa Bali.
"We will also run various shows during the event. The newest one is the Pho The Hie performance," he said.
Budi said the Pho The Hie wayang is usually only performed in Chinese temples, but was on special display at the Wayang museum for Wayang Week.
Pho The Hie
is a style of wooden puppet that originated in China. It was first
brought to Indonesia in 1885, and since 1950 has been performed using
Malay dialogue.
